Do I need to get a new Internet service to use Smile Radio?
No. Smile Radio is designed to work with your existing high-speed internet connection that most dentist offices already have. If you have business DSL, cable, T1 or other high speed service already, chances are Smile Radio will work just fine at your office and won’t effect anything else on your network. If, however, your dental office has poor internet connectivity (slow speeds, lots of users on a slow connection, frequent Internet drop outs), you might have problems receiving Smile Radio. Remember, you can try out Smile Radio in your practice risk free for 30 days so you can see how it works.
Will I need special assistance to install the Smile Radio Media Player?
Generally, no. The Smile Radio player is designed to be “plug and play”. The most common special need is for an Ethernet cable run from your dental office network’s router or switch to the Smile Radio media player near your office’s sound system. A seven foot cable is included, but depending on the distance, you may need to purchase a longer Ethernet cable (available at most electronics, office supply or Home Depot stores). If the cable must be run between rooms, you may want to contact a telephone or cable installer to assist.
I have an internet connection near my stereo, but it’s already being used by a PC. What should I do?
The easiest solution is to purchase a small network switch (about $25 at most office supply stores). This is like a multi-plug “extension cord” for your internet connection – giving you additional outlets or “ports” so you can connect the Smile Radio player to the same connection as your PC. We are happy to provide telephone or email technical assistance on purchasing and installing a switch if you need it.
Can Custom Channels Media Player connect to the Internet using WiFi instead of a cable?
Yes. You’ll need to know your WiFi security code (WEP key) and network name. Note that WiFi connections may be less reliable than Ethernet cable connections and subject to drop outs due to interference or congestion. If you want to use WiFi to connect your media player to the internet, call or email us for simple, step-by-step instructions.
Can I use Smile Radio for individual patients on headphones – like an iPod?
Smile Radio is designed for “whole office” listening on overhead speakers in your operatories, waiting room and employee areas, not individual patient listening. If you offer headphones to patients with an iPod or MP3 player, that’s still the best solution for individual listening.
Can I choose the specific songs and artists I want to hear?
Smile Radio has many continuously updated channels and styles of music to choose from – and we’re sure you’ll find one or more that you like. But sorry, no. You’ll have to use your iPod for that.
I play my own music now. Do I really have to pay licensing fees if I use CDs or an iPod?
Yes. Songwriters, composers and music publishers depend on royalties from the “public performance” of their music – on the radio, live in concert, and even in stores and dental offices. So, copyright law requires businesses that play music get licenses from and pay royalties to licensing organizations like ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. All license fees and reporting are included with Smile Radio.
